Sunday, February 25th, 7:00am – Gasparilla Distance Classic Half Marathon (Tampa, FL)
4th – Tyler Pennel 1:04:17
“The weather was warm and humid, so I knew that running a smart race was most important,” said the veteran ZAP Pro, Tyler Pennel. “After a few miles, I let the leaders go knowing that the heat would get to them and I would reel them back in. I was able to catch one of them, but they all ran tough in not ideal conditions. Overall, the race was a good effort with Boston coming up in 7 weeks.”
Saturday, March 3rd, 8:00am – Florence Forth 10K Road Race (Durham, NC)
1st – Matt McClintock 30:31.4, 2nd – Joe Stilin 30:31.6
Matt McClintock and Joe Stilin claimed first and second place in the Florence Forth 10k and North Carolina USATF 10k championships. Stilin and McClintock gradually pressed the pace over rolling hills and into a stiff headwind over the final miles, only managing to shake third place finisher Clinton Cahall in the final 200 meters. McClintock and Stilin finished together with identical times of 30:31, with McClintock claiming the state championship title.
”With 50 meters to go I checked over my shoulder, saw Matt was clear of third place, and let him catch me so we could split the win”, Stilin said. “It was a great effort and good step towards big races later this year for both of us.”
This year was the sixth annual edition of the Florence Forth Race, which benefits the Autoimmune Encephalitis Alliance, and served as the USATF-NC 10K Road Championships.
Saturday, March 3rd, 11:00am – Oskar Blues Brewery 4 Miler (Brevard, NC)
1st – Josh Izewski 19:29, 2nd – Andrew Colley 19:29, 3rd – Johnny Crain 19:36 (Won Mile Premium in 4:45), 5th – Pardon Ndhlovu 20:01
“I was merely a spectator early on watching Johnny unleash a sub 30 second final 200 meters to take the Mile bonus for ZAP,” commented ZAP newest resident athlete, Josh Izewski. “From that point on, Andrew and I continued to push up the one hill on the course and negative split to the finish. We crossed the finish line together, followed closely by Johnny for a 1-2-3 finish with Pardon just behind in 5th! It was a great race and well put together event, one which I would love to run again!”
