On ZAP Endurance athletes Joe Stilin and Matt McClintock opened their 2021 outdoor track campaigns this past weekend at the Trials of Miles meet in Austin, TX.
McClintock took to the track first in the men’s 5,000m run, the replay of the race can be found here. The field immediately strung out in a line behind the rabbit who went through the first mile in 4:20. McClintock took up his place in the line of runners and was closer to 4:23 at the mile. As the field went through halfway the race began to break apart, and despite running on his own for much of the 2nd half McClintock stayed focused and came away with a 13:58 clocking in his first track 5,000m in nearly 2 years.
The 10,000m runners were next up on the track and Joe Stilin immediately put himself in the first position behind the rabbits. (You can watch a full replay of the race here.) Stilin ran his final collegiate season at Texas where he earned his master’s degree, and he was intent on making a strong homecoming last weekend. After opening up the season with a 14:21 indoor 5,000m Stilin went through the 5,000m mark in 14:16, showing his vast improvement from just a few weeks ago.
As the race became more fractured over the final kilometers Stilin continued to run strongly, securing a 6th place finish in a time of 29:02. The race marked a good show of improvement for Stilin as he returns to the track in 2021 after 2 years of working hard at the marathon distance.
