Andrew Colley and teammate Joanna Thompson competed in the Lawyer’s Have Heart 10k in Washington DC on Saturday. Despite the 7am start time, race conditions were well into the 70’s with high humidity. Undeterred by the warm weather the men’s field passed through the flat opening 5k in 14:25. ZAP-Reebok’s Andrew Colley remained tucked into the lead pack of 6 through the halfway point. As the group made it’s way to 4 miles the course moved away from the river and into the rolling hills of downtown. Colley threw in a surge just past 4 miles that whittled the group from 6 down to 4. As they passed the 5 mile mark the course climbs a steep uphill section where Colley put in another hard move. This time he opened a small lead on the pack that grew to 15 meters by the top of the hill. As they crested the hill with just over 1k to run, Colley powered his way to the line to maintain his lead and finish 3 seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Kemoi. Despite a hilly back half Colley negative split the race to finish in 28:45 with a 14:20 second 5k.
For Thompson, it was her first race back since finishing 10th at the Boston Marathon two months ago. Thompson took home 9th place in the women’s field. Both Thompson and Colley will be racing next at the Peachtree Road Race on July 4th, which will serve as the 2018 US 10k Championships.
