McClintock 6th at US 10km Champs

The On ZAP Endurance headed to Atlanta for what is becoming an annual July 4th tradition, the Peachtree Road Race. This year’s edition of the race also served as the US 10km Championship event. ZAP athletes Matt McClintock, Josh Izewski, Joanna Thompson and Whitney Macon all competed this year.

All of the athletes are at various stages of their training. Joanna and Matt are both in the back half of their summer racing season, having competed at shorter distance events this spring, with Matt setting the ZAP club record of 28:13 for 10,000m on the track at the end of May. Josh and Whitney were both coming off relatively long racing layoffs and were excited to get in some shorter racing before beginning marathon training at the end of July.

McClintock, who had strung together a series of strong races between 5k and 10k so far this spring and summer, put himself in the lead pack of the men’s race from the beginning. (You can watch the replay here, the video is cued up to start roughly 12minutes into the race.)

Izewski was also in the lead pack early, and as the pack strung out in the first 5k he continued to be patient and found himself running by athletes as they fell off the lead pack in the 2nd half of the race.

As the lead pack dwindled over the hills in the 2nd 5k of the race McClintock remained in the lead group. With just a mile to go there McClintock was one of six athletes remaining in contention for the win. He would go on to finish 6th in a time of 29:03, less than 20 seconds off the win. Izewski finished 14th overall in a time of 29:38.

On the women’s side, the race strung quickly with Joanna and Whitney both exercising patience early and then working past some of their competitors over the 2nd half of the race. Joanna finished 13th in 34:58 with Whitney not far behind in 18th place.
