In their first race since competing at the US Marathon Championships last month, the five On ZAP Endurance athletes swept the top placings at the Matanzas 5k in St. Augustine, FL this past weekend.
For the first time the race had an equalizer bonus for the first person, male or female, to cross the line. Joanna Thompson, along with the rest of the women’s elite field, started nearly 2 minutes ahead of the men. Thompson was immediately off on her own as she separated herself from the pack, and by the mile her only pursuers were the On ZAP Endurance quartet of Joe Stilin, Josh Izewski, Matt McClintock, and Andrew Colley.
Working together, the men passed Thompson in the final mile with Colley and McClintock crossing the line together in 14:26 with Stilin and then Izewski close behind in 3rd and 4th. Thompson was the first female to break the tape 30 seconds later.
Colley will be the first to return to action at the US Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee this weekend. The race will be run at the Apalachee Regional Parkway on Saturday, February 2nd, with the men’s senior race beginning at 1:10pm. The race will be shown live on USATF.TV (subscription required) or you can follow along with our live Twitter updates!
